november snow

time to write about the snow last week.

it was expected. the forecast was below freezing temperature for tuesday, nov 28. so we knew snow was coming. didn't we?

sunday morning I woke up with a little snow building up in my backyard. it was slushing as I was driving to church, but it quickly turned to rain as I got to the u-district area. for lunch we went up north to four seasons. as we were enjoying our delicious lunch, one of our friends looked out the window to see that it's snowing. by the time we finished lunch in around one and a half hours, all our cars were covered in snow, and it was snowing heavily still. it was the start of the november snow. as I was deciding on whether to go home or continue hanging out, we drove to one of our friends' place at northgate. the snow started to turn into rain there. so we decided to hang out with the rest at starbucks, uvillage. it started snowing again as I was driving to small group. uvillage was so beautiful. too bad I didn't bring my camera. driving in snow is kind of cool. as long as the roads aren't icy. and usually the roads are icy when it's snowing because it's that cold and any liquid turns to ice. so, it's unsafe, yes, to drive in snow, but nevertheless I got to have fun a little bit.

monday morning came and the snow was still on the ground, since the temperature was still below freezing. drove to school, parked by the park, went to classes and work. by 4 we heard news of hailing and snowing all over the city. by 5, it was snowing pretty heavily. again, a pretty sight to see snow showers on campus. again, no camera to capture the view. evening class was cancelled because the instructor was snowed in. met up with my cousins and we started to walk home. the roads were all icy by now and a lot of the cars were abandoned by the side of the road. almost halfway home, we decided to go back and try to drive our cousin's car home. she drove really slowly and carefully, and we made it home :) all over seattle traffic was horrible. cars were stuck on I-5. friends had to spend hours to go home from work. heard from a friend that it took her 9 hours to go home from downtown to federal way!

tuesday was the coldest day I've experienced in seattle. my backyard was all white, outside was all white. no news of campus closure. friends told us that our class was cancelled because the instructor couldn't make it. called the office and was told that campus was open as usual. started walking with my roommates to greenlake. on the way, got a call from the office, it was closed for the day. still no campus closure report. stopped by to have lunch. after a good filling lunch, we walked to the bus stop near campus. warmed up in my car first as I was talking with my bro a little bit. took the bus, got to greenlake, not much snow. it was quite cold. we walked to chocolati, kept ourselves warm in there with the help of very delicious hot chocolate drinks. went home at around 4. found out that the campus was closed at 3. walked by the campus and could see that the parking lot was still white and icy.

campus opened at 10am on wednesday. it closed early at 3, thanks to the forecast of an artic storm coming in. decided to drive my car home after work. waited for half an hour for the snow to melt and the car to warm up. a little bit worried about driving on icy roads. drove very slowly. just a block away from home, I couldn't stop my car at a roundabout. good thing there were no cars parked and I was able to stop the car by going into a tiny ditch. it snowed from 9-10, but it quickly turned to rain. the temperature's going up. still cold, but at least not below freezing cold.

by thursday it was back to normal. the morning class was only half filled. everywhere's still covered with snow pretty much. not as thick, it's all starting to melt away. but it's quite neat to walk out to see white patches of snow here and there. my first ever november snow.
